Tour de France more dangerous than us riding the streets?

I saw the other day in the race that a car passed a cyclist and clipped him as he went by.

I don't think the support vehicles are this aggressive in the California races. I've been following the race somewhat and notice the cars getting too close to the riders all the time. I know if I was in a bike race I would want it to be safe. It would be awesome to have the whole road and not have to worry about cagers all the time, but it seems even the pros dont get a break.

Its kind of maddening and irritating that they do this. They should keep their distance until the rider signals he needs something. These support cars are just too aggressive.
