Detailing A Newly Acquired C&V Bike

Detailing these old bikes (and even the "newer" vintage bikes) is a labor of love. I wanted to start a thread for those that are in the middle of a resto/refurb or just getting the crud off before going on to the good stuff of wrenching.

I'll share one of my secrets for drivetrain cleaning. Keep in mind this is for the really badly neglected bikes. First, a generous application of Marvel's Mystery Oil on the chain. Ride the bike around using all the shifting functions to loosen the grime for easier removal. Second, wipe down the chain thoroughly. Third, grab a can of brake cleaner to spray all grime from the removed back wheel's freewheel/cassette and all shifting components. Be very careful to mask or cover all nearby paint and especially decals so they wont lift from the strong chemicals.

At this point you can grab your favorite chain lube and get to working on another area.

Hope this helps somebody.
