Signed up and entered the Cup'n'Cone Century in Cary, NC.
Heat at the nearby airport was 103. If you didn't leave the 25-mile rest stop at 2.0 hours, you had to stop at 50.

My bud and I had plenty of time, but we simply waited at the rest stop, ate sherbet and ice cream and chilled on the grass (figuratively) until 2.0 hours came and then we headed back.

Even at 50 miles, from about 37 miles to 50, the route was dotted with cramping folks. I dismounted 3 times in the last 13 miles, but everything went fine.

It was so hot, no one even cared about all the pretty girls in spandex, because the heat took all that out of the equation.
We were just a bunch of very sweaty cyclists, doing what we like, heat notwithstanding.

6 steel bikes out of 580. Basically a Trek convention, with some outsiders.
1-64cm or larger Schwinn Traveler
2-Trek 520 (there is always at least one)
3/4-A pair of TiG-welded 853 Lemonds
5-Some nut on a pink/yellow Centurion Ironman.
6-A handbuilt frame (by the rider) who used to work for "Proteus," something or other. Nice lugs, friction NR.
