'97 giant kronos gs - upgrade?

Hi all,

I'm pretty new to riding with any regularity. I've got a second hand '97 Giant Kronos GS, chainring is triple 28/38/48, rear cogs are 7-speed 14-28 teeth and all in it is just shy of 25 lbs.

My goal is to htfu and get faster and stronger. Is it worth riding this chromoly beast for training? The extra weight isn't necessarily a bad thing, is it?

I'm not going to get rid of it, so the questions:

Is it worth it to change the gearing?
Should I stick this one in the shed and buy something new (the Allez calls my name in the night... I'm partial to some Trek bikes, too -- my price range is < $2500)?
