What do you mean exactly, safe gap? Are you trying to keep up with faster riders that pass you? Are you racing them? Or just shadowing other riders?
I try to keep at least 20 feet between.
None of the above? I've really only had the issue when riding on streets with stop lights. With lights a short distance apart i'm not trying to keep up, pass, race, or shadow them. I'm trying to get to my destination, trail, path, etc.
