More watts= more light to a point. The optics of the lens and reflector are more important IMHO. Which is why I usually buy B&M lights. I have seen some impressive home built lights too. Most LED lights are purported to be good for 10,000 hours...that is a loooong time to be riding at night, even if you rode at night for 8 hours at a time every night of the year it would take 3.5 years to maybe burn one out.
