I applaud the radio stations that carried Mr. Kalb's opinion piece. We live in a nation where most media outlets, such as Fox, are under the control of the extreme neo-fascist radical right, and NO range of opinions is allowed. A number of the posters have made clear: their agenda is not cycling; it is to attack the very existance of any radio station that is NOT controlled by the radical right.
Unless cyclists understand how motorists think, cyclists will be unable to share the roads safely with bikes. We have a wonderful park in Houston, called Memorial Park. Larger than Central Park in New York City. There is a four lane "Parkway" running through the Park that carries about 10,000 vehicles per hour during rush hour at speeds that usually exceed 40 MPH and sometimes 50 MPH. During rush hour, these vehicles are running almost "bumper to bumper".
Cyclists have a "legal" right to ride on the Parkway, and there are cyclists dumb enough or stubborn enough to do so. When cars come up behind a bike going 20 MPH and the flow of traffic is 40 MPH, it forces the motorist to make a "panic" adjustment in speed...and then the vehicle behind him, and the vehicle behind him.
The flow of traffic makes it impossible to change lanes and go around the cyclist. So, soon, dozens of vehicles are crawling along at 20 MPH, with their drivers getting more and more angry.
I'm not dumb or stubborn. I don't ride on Memorial Drive. I select roads where there are very few vehicles, and most are going no faster than I am. But, while I am riding down a narrow sidestreet near the Park, I must deal with furious motorists who have developed an intense hatred of cyclists. They are not angry at me, they are angry at the idiot cyclists who disrupt roads such as Memorial Drive. But, I pay the price of their anger...including the guys in trucks who like to "play chicken" with their right hand mirror and my left shoulder.
So, I appreciate Mr. Kalb informing cyclists of how angry many motorists are...we don't have to "understand" that anger, but we must deal with it. The "Advocacy and Safety" Forum has become the place where the "Moron Class" of cyclist is always recruiting new members. Their battle cry is always: "We have a right to ride on ANY road, at ANY time"....These are folks who understand ALL of their rights, but understand NONE of their responsibilities.
And, I am grateful that in America, there are still a FEW radio stations that care about more than Tom Cruise's latest fake marriage, and that aspire to be more than a mere mouthpiece for the ruling party's political propaganda.
