Rear tyres wear faster under normal use... with the extra rear load on a touring bike the wear to the rear tyre will be accelerated.

Have seen many touring bikes come in with rear tyres that are nearly bald and front tyres that still look virtually new despite them being installed at the same time and have experienced this on my own bikes.
