FYI this roadway features, from centerline out, a raised center median, an 11' travel lane, a 5' bike lane, and a 7' parking lane. Most cars are parked with their driver side doors at the border of the bike lane and parking lane, such that an open door extends across all but a few inches of the bike lane.
Traffic on this road is slow during the day due to congestion and the high volume of pedestrians crossing to and from NCSU campus. Transit bus traffic is frequent - and these transit buses are 9' wide. Bicycists have complained that bus drivers on this section of road honk their horns at cyclists because there isn't room for bus drivers to pass cyclists who stay out of the door zone. The original plan was to use shared use markings outside of the door zone.
I have a strong opinion against the door zone lane and in favor of shared lane markings in the center of the normal lane.
