I'm only getting more confused on the spindle differences.

Back when Phil first introduced their BBs, about 1971, there was only one spindle. It fit about everything. Call it ISO, call it Campy, but I don't think it was JIS. I think they called it "square".

I've just installed a refurbished early style Phil into my 1971 Gitane TdF (with French cups, of course), and reinstalled the original Stronglight 93 crank. Seems a perfect fit.

I have another Stronglight 93 crank running on an early-to-mid 70's Campy ball & cup BB in my 1963 Hetchins. That also seems to be a fine fit.

I thought JIS came out of Japan only in the late 70's, and very few European makes adopted it.

I have no doubt that old TA and Stronglight cranks can fit on a JIS spindle, but it just doesn't seem to make sense that they were made for it, or that they represent the best fit. Yes? No?

Not trying to be pedantic, as this same subject is roiling in another thread. I really do want to better understand this. I've got another frame coming that I will hope to use a "triplized" Campy crank (pre-84, I think). I'm still not sure what BB will be best for it, either.

Thanks!
