I believe it's an in-line version of the barrel cable adjusters that are usually on the frame at the top of the down tube. My CAAD9 has something similar. I guess you could call it trim but that's a different connotation, this is for occasional adjustments, when you have cable stretch for instance. Trim is usually used more often than that when it's available.
