I think the OP should bear in mind that as his fitness and comfort levels increase that "reach" might not seem so far.

I am very close to the physical dimensions you describe for your self. A 53/54cm bike is generally a good fit for me.

Here's how I can tell if a bikes toptube is too short. With the "stock" stem and my hands in the drops I bang my knees into the back of my elbows. Now don't cheat and spread them out but tuck them in.

Also with a too short top tube turning in a small circle your toes will become trapped behind the front wheel. This can be awkward and dangerous.

That said I personally feel better on a slightly small bike vs. a slightly big bike.
