1) Bidding early only opens the possibility of a bidding war which will drive the price up, so smart buyers don't.
2) If someone is watching a similar item that ends earlier than yours, they're bidding on that first.
3) 55/Rad may be correct. Hard to tell. The only items I ever see with bids on day 1 are things with $1 opening bids.
