I'll leave the argument for A&S, but to specifically answer your question, the news media is to blame for this strange phenomenon. It goes something like this:

"The cyclist was hit head on by the oncoming train. The few parts of his body that remained were strewn over a 3 mile radius. Unfortunately, the cyclist was NOT wearing a helmet."
