But in the context of cycling, it's been interesting - and usually disappointing - to see the lack of camaraderie among cyclists in the various areas where I ride. (I ride in north-central Maryland on weekends, and in the Virginia Beach / Chesapeake area during the week.)

It happens frequently: I'm riding along, alone, and I see a cyclist coming toward me, on the opposite side of the road. I'm usually pushing hard, but always make a point of lifting my hand off the hood and waving. Nothing exuberant - just a friendly how-ya-doin'.

Four times out of five I just get a look, even a scowl, and they keep going. Doesn't matter if the rider is clearly a beginner on a Walmart special, or a cat-1 with a $10,000 Pinarello - there just isn't that much bonhomie out there.

Sad. What are your experiences?
What do you look like?

If you look like chipcom or me I understand why they don't wave back.
