Bikes: too many bikes from 1967 10s (5x2)Frejus to a Sumitomo Ti/Chorus aluminum 10s (10x2), plus one non-susp mtn bike I use as my commuter

A decent tire should last you lots more than 1,000 miles. IMO any blowout before tread is worn through is a premature failure. Not that it doesn't happen because of cuts or other road hazards, but you want a tire to last until the tread is gone.

I ride tubulars and typically can go 3-5,000 miles before the tread is worn through on a rear tire and I've never had a front tire wear through, though I've gotten close.

I don't have any particular tire suggestions, but suggest that if your roads are bad or if you weigh more than 160 pounds, you consider a larger section tire. You'll get a better ride and longer life (all other things being equal)
