Sounds like a transitional red might be good. Light transmission is what you should consider, and most glasses sites would give some detail. SoCal in June has that gloomy not-to-bright light I recall from SF, and I wear red lenses for those days. They have a 28% light transmission, and are fine even when it's a bit darker early in the morning. I change to something darker for brighter days.
+1 on this. I was able to pick up a deal on Rudy Project glasses with 4 different lenses- the typical dark sunglasses lens, racing red photochromic lenses, lazer blue, and yellow. To be honest, for all but riding at night (yellow) and the very brightest of days (when lazer blue works better), the racing red is a pretty great choice. I find everything from very cloudy, to pouring rain, to bright sun, the racing red photochromic work great- it needs to be extremely dark (like I said, riding at night) or extremely bright for me to even think about using a different lens.
