You'll likely be paying for a new barrel adjuster but the shop might spot you one for free as they are only a few bucks and they likely have a bunch laying around.

Spend some time reading threads here plus more at www.sheldonbrown.com and www.parktool.com and you'll quickly learn a lot. You'll learn even more buying a spare bike to work on and improve your skills.
