There is really no such thing as a cheap hand held mapping GPS. But I would recommend the Garmin GPS 60 series. It has a larger display to see more of the map.

But even the 60 is too small IMHO to be of any real use to see the map. For that you should look into a tablet PC. A tablet PC and a hand held GPS would be a great combo. The ultimate would for them to have the ability to talk to one another so you get the same route computed on both but that does not exist yet.
