By tighter spacing, I mean that each gear change results in a small change in pedaling cadence.

With a 50/34, if you're going 18 mph on the small ring and jump to the big ring, you'll have to dump 3 or 4 gears on the rear cassette to maintain a comparable speed. With a 50/38, the jump is less dramatic.
