First Cycling Tour - Atlantic Coastal Route

Hey all,

Just want to introduce myself quickly before getting to a few questions I have regarding cycling the Atlantic Coast Route.

My name is Ryan. I’m 27 years old, I'm from just south of Boston, Massachusetts and I’m currently a full-time Travel Blogger at my website called Pause The Moment.

My interest in cycling tours has grown incredibly in the last couple of months and after doing a bit of research I decided to purchase my first touring bike - a 2011 Novara Safari. I'm waiting for it to arrive at my local REI and I'm attempting to plan to ride the Atlantic Coast route to Miami, maybe even the Keys.

I've never done a tour before, but I've ridden bikes my whole life just not long distance. I strength train with kettlebells, do crossfit type workouts 4-5 days/week so I'm in excellent shape both cardio wise, and on the weight lifting end. I'm certain I'd have no issues riding long distance. My main concern at the moment is when I should start this tour...?

I would be able to leave mid October 2011, but I'm just not sure it's too late to head down as far as weather goes. Has anyone done this route or a similar route during the months of October/November/December? I assume it gets warmer as you head south but I'd love to hear some feedback from people who have actually completed this ride in the fall/winter.

My second question is how long do you think it would take? I plan on riding 5-6 days/week with a minimum of 60miles/day. That's the goal of course, some days might be more, some may be less. If I left somewhere around the 25th of October, I should be able to make it to Miami or possibly the Keys before Christmas, right? The only reason I ask this is becuase I'd like to fly back to Boston and be home for Christmas.

I'm hoping this isn't a stupid question, as I'm new here! Take it easy on me... LOL

Would love to hear back from you guys... looking forward to meeting you all. Also, if anyone is planning on doing the Atlantic Coast route anytime soon, feel free to contact me!

Thanks again,

Ry
