If you do long steep technical descents, or ride in the rain, yes. If you can't afford to replace an expensive carbon rim when you trash it on a pothole, yes.
I save my carbon rims for races and use inexpensive aluminum rims for training. Saving grams or being more aero is not that important in training, but reliability is.
