I have figured that since the mid 1980s I have spent enough on cars to buy a few homes. If I stayed carfree and invested my money I could be retired before I'm 50. In youth you can't see past tomorrow.
A bigger concern for me is the youth who now can't do wonderful things like spend 6 months in Argentina or take a year off to study Russian because they are tied into a car payment (and probably a huge student load... too). It's a real tragedy.
