A bigger concern for me is the youth who now can't do wonderful things like spend 6 months in Argentina or take a year off to study Russian because they are tied into a car payment (and probably a huge student load... too). It's a real tragedy.
Which is one of the reasons neither of my two choose to own cars. My DD is headed back to grad school, then is planning a Peace Corps stint. Her last car was an all cash purchase, when the repairs threatened to exceed the value of the car, she sold it and that was 4 years ago.
I also wonder just how some of these students make it when they graduate with massive school debt, then have to pile a car payment on top, and all this on a job that likely doesn't pay all that much to start.
