For people in the age bracket 50-65, car ownership and unsubsidized individual health insurance have about the same annual cost. At income levels below $35-40K it becomes a choice between health insurance and car ownership. I have the health insurance but not the car. Other people in similar circumstances choose the car and don't have the health insurance. Those who face that choice include widows and the long term unemployed.
