Sounds crazy but I practice riding both mountain and now road bike by traveling on thick deep gravel and dirt roads. I don't go fast but it really helps you feel the bike and practice balance recovery so when something does go wrong you don't panic and overcompensate. I haven't crashed yet but I've been close - 6 months of riding a road bike. I never crashed on my mountain bike, because going down when your jumping trails isn't a crash, its part of the ride!
