Since the birth of my first child a year ago (and the "high risk" weeks in the hospital leading up to it) I have had sporadic rides at best. But now I have him in the trailer and am going to try going car free (ok, my car kicking the bucket may have something to do with that decision). That means I should get 14 miles in every day towing the kid to Grandma's and then riding to work and back. Saturdays will be the time to have fun and ride 30, 40, 50 miles... hopefully more as I continue to rebuild my fitness. Nothing wrong with that, and commuting will help keep you in shape. It's not the fun part of riding, but it will keep you in shape for the real rides.
