With all due respect, the point of the post was replacing a daughter's stolen bike.

In terms of teaching one's kids life lessons, I believe that a young person attending university and riding her bike daily to get there is a young person heading in the right direction, and I'm not sure this parent or daughter needs "values" lessons on this or any other forum. Just my opinion.
