Bikes: '96 Litespeed Catalyst, '05 Litespeed Firenze, '06 Litespeed Tuscany, '20 Surly Midnight Special, All are 3x10. It is hilly around here!

More likely intended for the road triple market. A current 105 triple crank (50/39/30) and an 11x28 cassette requires 37 teeth worth of wrap. The 105 SS will handle 33 teeth and the GS 39 teeth so there is really a road use for the GS.
