If you have basic friction shifting just count the number of teeth on the largest and smallest sprocket in the rear, and the same for the chainrings up front. add the differences together as mentioned above and that is how many you need to handle. as long as the largest rear sprocket isn't more than 28, you don't need to worry about sgs.
