Well, my philosophy is you should never walk up a hill, but it's okay to ride 2 mph and stop to rest 8 times. Only on 3,000', it might be more than 8 times, but that's okay, too. Use whatever gear it takes to keep your pedals turning at a reasonable speed, don't get in a hurry. Be prepared to take some time on it. If there's not any kind of rest stop on the grade, take a Clif bar or two along, make sure you have enough water at that point.
