For comparing you don't even need to figure gear inches; it's an extra step. Just use a ratio to figure how many times the back wheel turns each crank revolution.

for example with the granny on the old bike: (front gear/back gear) 28/32= .875
with the new bike: 34/28= 1.2

That's 1/3 revolutions more, so that much harder.
