I changed the original post to be a little more specific about what happened. The truck was coming from the other way and turned to his left, blocking my path.
There were about a dozen witnesses and they could not figure out why he did it either. There was a bike maybe 40 feet in from of me (also doing 40km/hour+) and this guy tried to "squeeze" his turn in between us. He said that he figured I was going to stop for him. Well, I did stop. about 10 feet past the driver's side of his truck, having used my body and bike as brakes against the pavement for about 20 feet or so.
Ends up he is a really nice guy, who felt really bad about what happened and is taking full responsibility for this "accident".
That is in contrast to some other guy who turned right into my path (from a side road) on his truck earlier this year. I was lucky able to get out of the way and slow down in time. When I gave him sh*t, he commented that I was in the wrong because he had a drivers license for his vehicle and he paid good money for registration/insurance/license for his vehicle and as a bicyclist I had neither so he owned the road!
The trick is going to find be able to find someone locally who can do an *accurate" appraisal about the state of my frame . . . I'm kind of sweating it picturing an argument with an insurance adjuster about the *real*damages.
