+1 Sheldon Brown is great. Here is a nice crash course on English three speeds, including a bit about the Raleigh dropout eyelet placement. Raleigh was a HUGE company eventually encompassed many of the ubiquitous English brands. Companies like Reynolds, Sturmey Archer and even Brooks I think were all part of the Raleigh operation.
