Western Auto Raleighs are documented on page 200 of Frank Berto's book, "The Dancing Chain".

The basic story is that in 1963 Raleigh stiffed Western Auto at the last minute after several years of relationship. Westfield Manufacturing bicycle factory was recently purchased by a management group and had no customers. Sturmey Archer refused to give a good price on 3 speed hubs so Westfield (which became Huffy) went to Japan and met with Shimano. Westfield/Huffy was able to fill the cancelled Raleigh order at Western Auto's price. Put Shimano and Huffy on the US map...the rest is history.
