What makes good arm and leg warmers?

It's pretty warm during the day, but starting to get cold at night. When the sun is up, it's shorts and a t-shirt weather, but about an hour after it sets, there's a chill in the air. So it's the time of year for warmers.

What makes a good pair of arm and of leg warmers? What do you like about your favorites? Is there anything that matters beyond them being a technical fabric and fitting well? Are zippers a good or a bad thing here? Monkey thumbs? Key-sized pockets? If you were going to pick up another pair, what would you want in them?
