Hmmmm. I have a few base layers with thumb holes ( aka "monkey thumbs" ). I've used them to keep the sleeves in place while putting on a jacket and such, but, maybe by coincidence, the base layers that have these also have long arms. I'm able to pull the wrist of the sleeve out to about the point where it covers my palm but not my fingers, and use the thumb hole to keep it there, like a sleeveless glove. I had assumed that's what they were really for.
If it's a choice between rubber on the inside or elastic on the outside, I think I'll go with the elastic.
I'm going to be riding in the mountains as late as the weather allows, and that means I'll be stopping from time to time to enjoy the scenery, get a picture, fill my water bottles in a creek (I have a UV purifier) and the like.
