I've won several TT's, mostly on a road bike with clip on's, and never glued a number down. I have a TT bike now and it's definitely an advantage but probably not as big as you think. The good thing about the TT bike is that I have my shift levers in the aero position. That and the geometry is more apt for a TT. But still, get some clip on's and you are 90% there.
