If that's a limiting factor in your TT, go for it. You need the gears. For most other TT's the 50t is as good or better for mortals.
You are forgetting the rather important factor of high cadence at high speeds and how they slow you down considerably.
This is why TT'ers will be happier to ride at a cadence of 80-90 and use their 53-11 instead of going to a higher cadence.
