I still use the Snakeskin neoprene ones on my mountain bikes as they work very well....from the 70's to today I've always used black electrical tape (or whatever colour made sense) when I thought I needed one for my road bikes.....might be ugly but better than chips.
I've used neoprene protectors in the past and they do work well. I don't care for the aesthetic, though.
