My bet is that if you're using a 10 speed chain for 4,000 plus miles, the chain is "stretched" beyond spec, and you're chewing up your cassette.
+1 on Merlin. If you have 4k miles on a chain you have probably done some drive train damage.

We run a 10 speed set up, 250-260 lb team. We got about 1400 miles out of our first chain. We use a wipperman link on a shimano chain with no problems.

I change the chain when the 0.75 side of my gauge drops in. BUY A CHAIN GAUGE!!! They cost about $5.00 and are super easy to use. Every cyclist should have one. This handy little tool will take the guess work out of your chain wear and save your drivetrain.
