Bike purchase

Hi all,

I am looking to get a bike to ride during the winter months in Utah as well as some dirt roads in spring and fall. I have a road and mountain bike but do not want to ride them in these condition. Mountain is overkill and do not want to beat the road bike. Was looking at getting a backup steel/alum framed bike until a riding buddy told me I should look at a cyclocross bike. I more than likely will not race and do not want to go overboard, like I usually do, on the purchase. Something I can ride snowy roads and muddy fire roads to keep my riding endurance up thru winter and spring. Any recommendations on bike and setup. I am competitive and generally end up pushing myself regardless of the type riding...so a sturdy cruiser is out....know I will not enjoy that. Bikes I have looked at has been Focus Mares As2, Felt x75...specialized and Trek bikes seem pricey. Any insight, recommendations, or suggestions you could give on this type of bike would be greatly appreciated...thanks
