I emailed them about that when it first came out, specifying what types of roads to use/avoid, and they said it was something they were looking into implementing later on. The Google Earth application has latitude and longitude, so I imagine they can implement it into the Maps web service eventually. That stuff's all Beta, so I'm sure there will be more features as it is refined more and more.
