If what you describe was the true path to riches, the market place would already be doing it!
The path to riches isn't in bike stores.
Since Walmart and Target don't do bicycle service, the LBS gets the service business without having to sell bicycles with "little or no profit". This is exactly why they don't need to do what you are describing!
Right, because it's always smart to turn down profit and relationships.
Generally, they DON'T get the service. Why not? Because the customer has no relationship with the LBS, and will just discard the bike, and buy a new one.
