Shimano says older 5600-level brakes are not compatible with newer 5700 levers, as the cable pull is different. People have said that using mismatched brakes/shifters really decreases stopping power. So it works, but it will suck in comparison. I think the people telling you to replace brake pads are missing the point.
That's the contradicting information that I've been hearing/reading about too. Some people are saying that it will be fine, while others are saying that I will need to switch the brakes as well.
