Get a tire liner. Mr. Tuffy is one I've personally used and had great luck with.
In my experience, these cause more flats by rubbing on the tube than they prevent. Use with caution. And lots of talc.
I commute on Specialized Nimbus Sports, about $25-$30 each. Blackbelt protection is basically the Armadillo protection, just not all the way down the sidewalls. Comes in a bunch of sizes (26x1.5 and 700x28-38) too.
