I mistakenly posted this in the 50+ thread...did not notice where all of old dudes hang out...
I'm loving this sport. I started Feb 27th 2011
I have a Giant Suede Dx bought at a hi tech bike shop. Its a comfort bike and I told the sales guy that I wanted to do a 100 mile ride before my 70th birthday... He told me I was crazy. No way someone could ride that far on a comfort bike.. It was fun watching him eat crow in May
I have the most butt friendly saddle in the world. Rode the 100 miles in my Fruit of The Looms skivies. Did not have padded shorts.
My biking buddy had a new Cannondale road bike and all the biker togs and after 70 miles all he could say was this "butt needs to get off this bike" He did finish the Centruy with me but could not ride for a week his butt was so sore. I did 30 miles the next day.
Last year for for his 70th birthday he rode across Florida in July (very hot). His route was 152 miles.. He did 100 the first day and finished it the 2nd day...
I am a slow rider. I typicaly average 12.5 - 13.5 mph on these longer rides. Part of the reason is that my bike has limits when it comes to speed (tires, riding position etc.) Going into a headwind really slows me down.
Having done my first Century ride in May, I needed a new goal for my 70th birthday in July so my buddy and I rode around Lake Okechobee in Florida in a heat index of 104. We rode a total of 125 miles in 24 hours. We did 85 miles the first day. It was like riding in an oven.
Up on the dike totaly exposed to wind and sun ..no shade anywhere. Actually it was really great. If any of you want to know more about that ride, let me know. I have some pictures and can share details if anybody is interested in doing the same ride.
Sorry don't mean to sound like I am bragging here, but I am really excited about this new hobby. I think Im doing good for my age...
