I agree that it is service but specifically fitment, installations and repairs.
If the big 4 sold direct over the internet, no amount of customer service or convenience in a local bike shop would be sufficient to prevent the loss of a huge amount of new bike sales. People would rather go it alone if they can save 15-35%. This is already so true for parts , clothing and accessories for cycling. I'm sure it would be true for bikes too.
