That last is not a put-down, by the way--we all do things for reasons that we can't necessarily explain, even to ourselves. As in all other aspects of life, there's no shame in saying "I don't know."
It's a simple question, and I ask it honestly and in good faith. I would love to hear an answer from you, any anyone else.
Your questions have been posed fairly and honestly.
For me it's because of at least the following factors:
#0 A helmet is a bulky object which is easily damaged and is difficult to store off the bike.
#1 Helmets denormalize cycling and present an image of a dangerous sport as opposed to the low risk activity that it is.
#2 Helmets may increase rotational injuries.
#3 Helmets may affect the behavior of other road users, causing them to pass closer.
#4 Helmet use seems often to be correlated with a certain lack of intelligence on the part of the user.
