So, because I wanted to utilize a mirror on my commute, I dusted off the helmet that sat unused for years and attached a Third Eye to it. This, combined with the high vis / reflective tape and Planet Bike SuperFlash I attached to it helps me prevent being in a collision with a motor vehicle. I don't feel any need for it, and so do not wear it on neighborhood rides to the store, bike path rides, or even off road. (I'm not an aggressive off-roader)
I consider my helmet to be more helpful for prevention of a wreck with a car, than for mitigation of any injuries sustained in a wreck with one.
I agree that too many people make an unrealistic assumption of the risks of cycling, and harbor a faulty belief in the ability of a helmet itself to save them from grave injury or death. As such, I believe this thread offers some good information to help people make a more informed choice... Along with a little entertainment!
Sensible. If you're going to use a head-mounted mirror, it might as well be attached to a cycle helmet, giving a specific reason to wear one when cycling as opposed to any other activity. At the same time, you're aware of the limitations. This is the kind of thinking we need more of, rather than blindly assuming 'it makes you safe' Presumably, if you used handlebar mirrors instead, you wouldn't wear a helmet?
